Wheel testing rig and method

January 18th, 2006 · 3 Comments

Stan Pope has put together a great way to test different wheel and axle configurations without the need for a track or even a car.

Got an idea for a new lube you’d like to test? Or wonder what would happen if you installed the wheels at an angle? This rig will do it accurately. Wheels perform differently when they have load applied to them, so Stan’s method uses a simulated load equal to that of a pinewood derby car.

The link is to a non-existent site. I did a search and found Stan Pope’s article at: .

BTW the info on the Pinewood Freak site rocks! I have been “observing” my husband helping our 2 boys as they have worked on Pinewood Derby cars for the past 4 years. My husband has bought books and talked to other dads as he tries to teach the boys how to come up with the best running cars. Each year there was just something missing. This site has revealed multiple reasons for past failures and problems. Thank you for all your work. We still have a few more years to compete. This year we will be making lots of changes based on your wisdom and good comments from helpful readers. Thanks!

I am a single mom and this is my son’s first derby race. I am so relieved and glad that I found your site. Now I really feel confident that he will at least have a chance!! I’ve learned new things as well!! Who needs a man!! haha
